Alpacas are South American camelids, cousins to camels and llamas. They have been raised for centuries for their luxurious fiber. Alpacas are domesticated animals and they are related to the wild Vicunas.

Alpacas average 150 pounds and are about three feet tall at the wither (base of the neck).

There is much discussion as to the best diet for alpacas. In general they eat a grass hay which is frequently supplemented with alfalfa and/or a pelleted alpaca feed. We recommend you contact one of our members, they can best advise you on suitable forage locally available.

The best part of alpaca ownership is that nothing needs to be done with them other than some routine maintenance; regular feeding, watering and stall cleaning. Alpacas are very content to live their life eating and strolling. For those that prefer to be more involved with their alpacas, they can be shown at local, regional, and national shows in both halter and performance classes.
